Different maid in Johannes Vermeer’s famous work

The famous work “The maid pouring the milk” was created by the Dutch artist Johannes  

Vermeer. Although the maid in the painting was a rich girl hired by Jan to dress in maid  

costume, in the painting, it shows us a feeling of generous and simple. 

 

He wanted to present the naturist beauty without putting too many luxury costumes and 

fabulous accessories. Living in the hostile environment does not make the maid upset. 

She knew her life would be hard but also could be filled with joy.

 

The whole painting is not very complicated. Its outline is clear and the surroundings are 

plain but neat. The entire kitchen is simple but with feelings. It reminds people of old days.

The kitchen is very attractive to me. There is a window on the left side. On the desk, some 

food is placed messily. It is as ordinary as a common family’s kitchen. All of these want to 

show the truth of life. This nature scene without embellishing moves me a lot.

Then it comes to the maid in the picture. She is strong and is pouring milk. Apparently, 

she is satisfied with current life. Her face is rosy and I know what is satisfied from her. And 

I what is the so-called “content is better than riches”.

 

The slight changes of the lights reflect the inner part of the maid. She has a peaceful heart 

and she is silently thinking. The thought is also in our minds. And that makes her beauty a 

feast on our eyes. Only the beauty that is closed to people’s life would be the most

costumes could be an essential element to make the character outstanding. While the 

strong arms of working people can also show the vicissitudes of life. She does not have a 

good look body. And she has neither elegant temperament nor beautiful clothes to attract 

the others. And that is the life of working people; their life is not that easy. If she dresses in 

sexy or nice costume, she is no longer a labor. She is a rich girl who does not need to 

worry about earning. Meanwhile, her maid costume is not used for satisfying her master. 

So she can wear as comfortable as she wants.
